01 —Why desk height is the #1 ergonomic factor
Of all the ergonomic variables in a workstation — chair padding, monitor brightness, keyboard layout — desk height has the single largest downstream effect on your body[cite: 157]. Get it wrong and every other adjustment compensates incorrectly[cite: 158]. Get it right and the rest of your posture often corrects itself[cite: 158].
Here's why: desk height directly determines where your elbows rest, which dictates wrist angle[cite: 159]. It also sets the relative position of your monitor, which controls neck angle[cite: 159]. Neck angle, in turn, governs how much load your cervical spine carries — a head tilted just 5 cm forward adds the equivalent of 15–20 kg of load to your neck muscles every hour you sit[cite: 160].
⚠️ Standard desks are wrong for most people. The industry-standard desk height of 72–74 cm was designed for a 5'10" (178 cm) male[cite: 160]. If you're shorter or taller than this, a standard desk is ergonomically incorrect for you — and you're likely compensating without realising it[cite: 160].

02 —How to measure for perfect desk height
You only strictly need one measurement — your standing height[cite: 163]. Our calculator uses validated anthropometric ratios to estimate everything else[cite: 164]. But if you want precision within 1–2 mm, take these three measurements[cite: 165]:

①Standing height (required) — stand barefoot against a wall, heels together, look straight ahead[cite: 165]. Measure from floor to the top of your head[cite: 166]. Use this number in the calculator above.

②Popliteal height (lower leg) — sit on a hard surface with your feet flat on the floor and knees at 90°[cite: 166]. Measure from the floor to the back of your knee (the popliteal fold)[cite: 167]. This directly determines ideal chair height[cite: 168].

③Upper arm length — stand with your arm relaxed at your side, elbow bent to 90°[cite: 168]. Measure from the tip of your shoulder (acromion) to the tip of your elbow[cite: 169]. This determines ideal desk height relative to your seated position[cite: 170].

04 —5-step ergonomic desk setup guide
Once you have your numbers from the calculator, set your workstation in this exact order[cite: 176]. Each step feeds into the next[cite: 177].
- 1Set chair height first — adjust until feet are flat on the floor and knees are at roughly 90°[cite: 177]. Your thighs should be parallel to the floor[cite: 178]. This is your foundation[cite: 179].
- 2Adjust desk height to your elbows — once seated correctly, your elbows should rest at or very slightly above desk level when your arms hang naturally[cite: 180]. The keyboard should sit at this height[cite: 181].
- 3Set lumbar support — sit fully back in the chair so your spine makes contact with the backrest[cite: 183, 184]. The lumbar support should sit at the inward curve of your lower back, roughly at belt level[cite: 184].
- 4Position monitor at arm's length — extend one arm forward; your fingertips should just touch the screen[cite: 185, 186]. The top of the monitor should align with your eye level[cite: 186]. Tilt the monitor back 10–20°[cite: 187].
